The Ely area is located in the Northeast region of Minnesota in the Superior National Forest, surrounded by vast areas of the Forest, hundreds of lakes and the Boundary Waters Canoe Area 1 million acres of wilderness. Deer, bear, moose and wildlife abound in Ely and the surrounding areas. Ely is also the home of the International Wolf Center and the new North American Bear Center.
In Ely you’ll experience the relaxed atmosphere of small town living yet the amenities of the big city like convenience to shopping, a hospital and an indoor ice arena to mention a few. Ely offers some of the best fishing, canoeing, and boating experiences anywhere in North America with walleye, bass and northern pike that nearly jump into the boat. For wintertime fun there are miles of groomed cross country ski trails and more than 100 miles of groomed snowmobile trails like the Taconite Trail that winds through state of MN and USFS lands timbered with birch, aspen and many majestic pines. The Taconite trail can take you from Ely, all the way to Grand Rapids, MN and if you want to ride in an easterly direction there is the Tomahawk Trail which will lead you to the North Shore and Lake Superior.
Downtown Ely offers many quaint and unique shops where you will find a variety of interesting items such as camping gear, clothing, home furnishings and décor, and of course plenty of souvenirs. Remember, all it takes is Border Lakes!
